About the Friends of Da’an Forest Park Foundation

" Ecological Park: Cultivating Dreams in Da’an "

Established in May 2014, the Friends of Da’an Forest Park Foundation is a non-profit civil organization dedicated to enhancing the environmental quality of Da’an Forest Park. By integrating business, city government, academic, and public human resources, the foundation focuses on promoting the development and use of ecological-friendly designs and practices that foster the positive development of the biodiversity of Da’an Forest Park. After a decade of excellence, the Foundation continues to be committed to its original mission of promoting the ecological transformation of Da’an Forest Park, emphasizing the health of the park’s trees and the renovation of recreational landscapes, with the aim of transforming Da’an Forest Park into the Central Park of Taipei .

Main Activities and Achievements of the Foundation during the first 10 Years
  1. Illuminating Da’an with Fireflies
Through habitat restoration and the planting of native plants, the Foundation has successfully revived the firefly habitat while at the same time increasing the surrounding biodiversity, making this accessible natural habitat the most celebrated firefly viewing spot in Taipei City.

  2. Ecological Mosquito Control
Utilizing the biological habits of mosquitoes, the Foundation manages both their breeding grounds and habitats. The Foundation employs non-chemical insecticides such as BTI, Metarhizium anisopliae, and sprays ash water to reduce mosquito breeding in an environmentally friendly manner.

  3. Tree Health Ensures Public Safety
More than six thousand trees in the park undergo regular inspection and pruning with the intention of fulfilling four key objectives: ensuring tree health, enhancing public safety, preserving scenic beauty, and maximizing ecological benefits. Prioritizing public safety through proactive tree risk management while safeguarding ecosystem services is essential when fostering sustainable urban environments. Furthermore, since 2020, annual "Woodpecker Workshops – Tree Pruning and Protection Program" have been held to raise public awareness about tree conservation efforts.

  4. Environmental Research and Surveys
The Foundation collaborates with scholars from National Taiwan University and related fields experts to conduct research on biodiversity and environmental factors affecting Da’an Forest Park. More than 60 basic ecological and cultural surveys have been completed with the aim of providing the basis for improving park management.

  5. Birdwatching by the Waterside
To eliminate odors from Bird Island on the park’s pond, we brought in extra soil from an adjacent  area to create landfill and improved drainage. A continuous filtration system has been employed to address eutrophication issues in the pond. People can now leisurely enjoy the area adjoining the pond’s edge and observe up close the breeding behaviors of herons during the breeding season.

  6. The romantic bald cypress wooden walkway
The bald cypress wooden walkway has been created to cross and follow the winding waterways near the pond. Along this walkway, which is surrounded by a rich variety of plants, the park landscape has become visually appealing throughout all four seasons. After the water features along this walkway were created, these features became habitats for native amphibians, fish, and aquatic insects.

  7. Azalea and Hydrangeas in Bloom
While we see from a bird's eye view that the azalea garden appears in the form of the heart of a rose, various hydrangeas have been planted around the azaleas. Since opening the Azalea Season in 2020, this feature has attracted countless flower enthusiasts every year, making it a popular spot in Taipei City for viewing azaleas and hydrangeas.

  8. Taipei Eco Gym-Water Cycling
Since its establishment in 2018, the Taipei Eco Gym (also called water cycling) while aiming to "nurture a forest with the energy of the city", has won nearly 30 domestic and international awards. Through harvesting the water from an underground rainwater tank and putting it back into circulation, the cycling of visitors to the park converts human kinetic energy into water-pumping energy. This facility combines both ecological and water features with a sports function, and public artworks to not only provide the public with relaxation and exercise but also increases the dissolved oxygen level, thus providing life energy for aquatic organisms.

  9. The Eco-friendly Restroom
The Eco-friendly Restroom, previously designated as Park Public Toilet No. 1, was completed and inaugurated in February 2024. This facility exemplifies a pioneering approach to public restrooms by incorporating the principles of ecology, sustainability, accessibility, gender equality, and information technology. The design integrates greenery, flowers, a gentle water feature, rooftop solar photovoltaics, and informative walls, setting a new benchmark for public restroom odels within the park space.

  10. Strolling and Dreaming beneath the Blooming Flowers
The Foundation has planted cherry trees in two cherry blossom areas on the north and south sides of the park. As the trees mature, the anticipation of the blooming flowers grows! Also, in the central area of the park, there is a Wishing Vine (also known as Wisteria) Flower Corridor, where blue and purple flowers bloom all year round, allowing visitors to stroll beneath the blooming flowers while making a wish.

  11. Hosting an Ecological Fair
Parks can function as invaluable hubs for natural education. Each year, the Foundation hosts an Eco Fair, bringing together close to 100  exhibits dedicated to ecological, cultural, and environmental education. This event offers market stalls and hands-on activities for the public, with the goal of instilling in society ecological conservation principles. Participating groups utilize this platform for mutual exchange, observation, learning, and networking, while collectively striving to protect the environment for future generations.
